What is an Alphabet?

An alphabet is a set of letters or symbols that are used to represent the sounds of a language in written form. The English alphabet, for example, consists of 26 letters that represent the sounds used in the English language. Each letter has its own name and sound, and they are arranged in a specific order.

Though phonologically English has only one set of alphabet, graphologically, it has four.

The term Upper case and lower case were coined when the typewriters were introduced. Upper case characters are capital letters, and lower case characters are small letters. When we press the shift key in a manual typewriter, the entire set of levers that carry fonts go downwards so that when we strike the key the upper part hits the paper where we have capital letters.
